What do chimney caps do?
A chimney cap or cowl sits on top of the chimney pot and stops things getting in: leaves, twigs, falling masonry, rain, snow, and the wildlife you don't want — pigeons, jackdaws, squirrels, the occasional rat. A cap keeps the inside of your chimney clean and dry, which means a safer fire and less work for your sweep.
What types of chimney caps do you fit?
We supply and install the full range:
- Bird guards — wire mesh cages that stop birds nesting in the pot
- Rain guards — angled tops that block rainfall while still letting smoke out
- Stationary anti-downdraught cowls — for chimneys that suffer from wind blowing smoke back into the room
- Revolving anti-downdraught cowls — spinning cowls that turn into the wind to stop downdraught
- Redundant flue caps — sealed caps for chimneys no longer in use
Should I cap an unused chimney?
Yes. A capped, sealed unused chimney is much less likely to take in rain, suffer freeze-thaw damage to the pot, or become a nesting site. We always inspect before fitting — any existing nests or debris are removed first.
Frequently asked questions
Will a cap make my fire harder to light?
A correctly-specified cap on a working chimney won't affect draw. We choose the right type for your appliance and chimney size on the survey.
Can you remove old bird nests before fitting a guard?
Yes. We check the chimney with a CCTV camera and clear any nesting material before the new guard goes on.
Do I need to be home when you fit a cap?
Usually not, as long as we have safe access to the property and chimney. Most caps are fitted from our cherry picker or scaffolding without entering the house.
