District Flues and Stoves provides ICS-accredited chimney sweeping across Norfolk and Suffolk, with a written sweep certificate issued on completion. Most home insurers require an annual sweep on active chimneys — we provide what the insurer needs.
How often should I sweep my chimney?
Industry guidance recommends the following sweep frequencies, based on what you burn:
- Wood — every 3 months during the burning season
- House coal — twice a year
- Smokeless fuels — once a year
- Gas — once a year
These are guides. Frequent use, damp wood or an older chimney can all mean a sweep is needed sooner.
Why does sweeping matter?
Soot and creosote build up inside the flue every time you burn a fire. Left long enough, that build-up can catch fire inside the chimney — and a chimney fire can take a roof off. A clean flue also pulls smoke out more efficiently, so the fire burns better and you use less wood. Sweeping also catches the things you don't expect: bird nests, fallen masonry, dead leaves, the occasional dead squirrel. The CCTV survey we run alongside the sweep finds problems before they become emergencies.
What does ICS-accredited mean?
ICS stands for the Institute of Chimney Sweeps — the UK trade body that trains and certifies professional chimney sweeps. ICS membership means our sweeps are tested, insured, and required to follow a code of practice. You get a written certificate on completion that your insurer will recognise.
What's included in a sweep visit?
- Full sweep of the flue using rotary or traditional brushes
- Vacuum extraction of all soot and debris — no mess
- Visual inspection of the appliance and flue
- A written ICS-accredited sweep certificate
- Optional CCTV survey (see the CCTV page for what this involves)
Frequently asked questions
How long does a chimney sweep take?
A standard domestic sweep takes around 45 minutes to an hour. Allow longer if a CCTV survey is being done at the same time, or if the chimney hasn't been swept for several years.
Will the sweep make a mess in my house?
No. We use sheeting and an industrial vacuum to contain all soot and debris.
Do I need a sweep certificate for my insurance?
Most home insurers covering a property with an active wood-burner, multi-fuel stove or open fire require proof of an annual sweep. The certificate we issue is recognised by UK insurers.
